In a world dominated by smartphones, it is easy to assume that wristwatches do not have a place in the modern world, but that is just an assumption. The reason why that notion is prevalent is that smartphones can also tell the time and that is basically the main function of a wristwatch.
Having said that, wristwatches still have their allure over smartphones. I mean, can you really treasure a smartphone that will just become obsolete after 2-3 years? I don’t think so.
In this article, I will talk about the advantages of wearing a timepiece, specifically in this day and age. This tackles mechanical watches and the inexpensive quartz watches as well. Although smartwatches are technically wristwatches, I will not include them in this post.
It Tells the Time
The most basic functionality of a timepiece, wristwatches can tell the time and it does so comfortably and conveniently. Ever been in a situation where you forgot to wear your watch but you had your smartphone and you were put in a position where your hands are carrying some stuff? How easy is it to whip out your smartphone out of the pocket? I am pretty sure it is hard because you can only do that by putting whatever it is that you’re carrying and fishing your phone out.
Well, for a wristwatch, all you have to do is do a quick glance on your wrist and that’s it. Furthermore, most watches nowadays, even the most inexpensive ones, are quite accurate with a +/- of 1-2 seconds on average.
Let me ask you something: What are the only acceptable accessories a man can wear on any occasion? I am willing to bet that your answer is a watch and you are not wrong about that.
The thing is, women have the luxury of putting anything that they like to accentuate their outfits, but the same cannot be said for men. Wristwatches are the only accessories that they can wear but the good thing is that you can find one that suits your style and taste.
Can you honestly say to yourself that you can buy as many smartphones as you can and collect them without saying that your money is better spent somewhere else? I am pretty sure you can’t because you know that phones get obsolete in a few years after its release.
A watch is a worthy investment because even if it spans decades, the watch, with proper care, will still last for quite a long time. In fact, they can become great heirlooms that you can pass on to the next generation.
There is a reason why some watches are expensive and that is because they can be quite a good status symbol. If you are seeing someone rocking a Patek Philippe watch, you will know that that person is quite successful in life and he doesn’t even have to open his mouth or show his credentials to do that.
Useful and Practical
Even if watches do not compare to the features that a smartphone provides, it still comes with watch complications or additional features that are practical and useful. Chronograph watches are popular because of their stopwatch and timer functionalities, and so are moon phase watches.
